How Much Life Insurance Does a Young Ohio Family Actually Need

April 12, 2025 · 6 min read

If you're a young parent in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati or anywhere in between, the standard advice of ten times your income is a starting point, not an answer. Your real number depends on your mortgage, childcare costs, future college plans, and how long your family would need income replacement.

Most young Ohio families we work with land somewhere between $250,000 and $1,000,000 of term coverage. That sounds like a lot until you add up a 25 year mortgage, two kids through high school, and a spouse who would need a few years to find footing.

The good news is that term life is cheap when you're young and healthy. A 32 year old non smoker in good health can often get $500,000 of 20 year term for less than the cost of a streaming bundle.

If you're not sure where to start, a licensed agent can walk through your numbers in about ten minutes with no pressure and no medical jargon.
